GDAI PhD Scholarship for African Students at SOAS in UK, 2018





Applications are invited for Mo Ibrahim Foundation scholarship available for African students at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). The scholarship is awarded to undertake Ph.D. research programme (full-time) in the field of Governance for Development in Africa.
The Centre of African Studies & SOAS in partnership with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation run this initiative with the aim of building skills, developing talent, and enabling Africans to improve the quality of governance in their countries.
SOAS, University of London is the only Higher Education institution in Europe specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the near and Middle East. SOAS is a remarkable institution.
The English Language requirement for all SOAS, University of London postgraduate programmes is 60% overall in FDPS Academic English course, or the standard IELTS requirements.
Course Level: Scholarship is available for undertaking Ph.D. research programme (full time).
Study Subject(s): Scholarship is awarded in the field of Governance for Development in Africa.
The eligible PhD are only those within the following departments:
  • Development Studies
  • Law
  • Economics
  • International Relations/Politics
  • CISD (Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy)
  • DEFIMS (Department for Financial and Management Studies )
  • Distance Learning: CEFIMS(Centre for Financial and Management Studies), DEFIMS
Scholarship Award: The scholarship provides for fees for three years and an annual bursary of £16.000 per year. The scholarship also covers visa costs, HIS and TB (if undertaken), provided receipts are submitted to the Centre of African Studies office.

Scholarship can be taken in the UK

Eligibility: Applicants must be domiciled (or permanent residents) in an African country. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa. Eligible Programmes: Ph.D. Programme (full-time) research undertaken by scholarship applicants must directly address or be applicable to the issue of Governance in Africa.
Nationality: Applicants from Africa (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zambia and Zimbabwe) can apply for this Mo Ibrahim Foundation scholarship. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa.
College Admission Requirement
Entrance Requirement: Candidates should normally have a good UK master’s degree (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant subject.
English language Requirements: Applicants (new admissions, i.e. starting in September 2016) must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2016. If their offer is conditional on English, they have to arrange their English test and ensure they meet the English requirements as soon as possible.

  • Complete application form (see pdf attached on the right side of this page)
  • A copy of the unconditional offer received from SOAS admissions office
  • CV (please include your email address)
  • 2 pages max statement outlining knowledge and interest in governance-related issues
  • Your research proposal (as sent to the SOAS Admissions Office)
Please note that CAS reserves the right not to award scholarships and will only award them where there are applicants judged to meet sufficiently high academic standards and with demonstrable interests in fields relevant to the objectives of the GDAI.
