Scholarship Description
The Coimbra Group Universities offers 3 scholarship programmes: Scholarship Programme for Young African Researchers, Scholarship Programme for Young Professors and Researchers from Latin American Universities, and Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood.
The Coimbra Group Scholarship Programme for Young African researchers aims to enable scholars to undertake research for a short research period and to help them establish academic and research contacts. During this period (generally 1 to maximum 3 months) they are engaged in their home institution, at a selected Coimbra Group university.
The call for applications for the Sub-Saharan Africa Scholarship Programme of the Coimbra Group is now on, and eligible applicants are encouraged to submit their entries. Bear in mind that all eligibility requirements would be considered.
Eligibility
Applicants should be:
- young academics (45 years or less i.e. born on or after 1 January 1973)
- nationals of and current residents in a country in Sub-Saharan Africa
- current staff members of a university or an equivalent higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa
- of doctoral/postdoctoral or equivalent status although some universities offer grants for Master’s level students.
Eligible groups
Citizens of all African countries (EXCEPT Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia - applicants from these countries are eligible under the Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood)

Scholarship benefits
Financial support is awarded to each successful applicant monthly for this program. The specific amount of funds offered depends on the individual school, therefore, visit the Coimbra Group website to confirm the specific amount of financial support from each University.
Method of Application
Applicants must fill in the on-line application form before the deadline date below. Candidates will be able to select one university only. Multiple applications will not be considered valid.
Applicants should identify a research supervisor in the host university (through the website of the university of your choice or by contacting the contact at the university of your choice (see table below). You should provide his/her contact details in the application form. Applicants are expected to take contact with their research supervisor at the university of their choice and submit a letter/e-mail of acceptance together with their application form which proves that the candidate has been accepted to carry out research under his/her supervision. Applications which do not fulfil this requirement will not be considered. The Coimbra Group Office is unable to help you with finding a supervisor.
Information should be submitted in English. The Coimbra Group Office will individually acknowledge each application received.

The deadline for applications is 16 March 2018 midnight (Brussels time)
PLEASE NOTE:
Within two weeks of submitting the online application, you should receive an email from the Coimbra Group Office confirming whether your application has been validated or not. This will be your only acknowledgement of receipt. If you do not receive the confirmation message it means that your application was not submitted correctly or there was a technical problem.
Coimbra Group Universities have been providing, since 2008, young researchers from universities in Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to spend a short period (generally 1 to 3 months) at a Coimbra Group University to carry out part of their research there.
The Coimbra Group, which was set up in 1987, is an association of 39 traditional European universities who aims to increase co-operation amongst its members by enhancing special academic and cultural ties, and creating channels of information and exchange. Its areas of interest and involvement include central and eastern Europe as well as countries in Latin America and Africa.
